If I’ve to rate the top 5 iPhone and iPod Touch Applications then Fring would be there without any doubt. The convenience of having all IM services along with VOIP in one can’t be beaten. Now I can use any SIP account to make calls from wherever I am. But there’s still one limitation and that is making calls over 3G/EDGE. Or may be there isn’t? Well, I guess you’ll find out after following this procedure to patch Fring to make calls over 3G/EDGE. Here you go:

  1. You must be running a Jailbroken iPhone / iTouch.
  2. Install original Fring via iTunes App Store.
  3. Download the patch from here.
  4. Now SSH into your iPhone / iTouch; remember root / alpine.
  5. Find Fring.app under root var/mobile/applications.
  6. To find the Fring.app, you then need to click on the most recently installed folder which will be your original Fring and inside should be the Fring.app.
  7. On your computer, unzip the fring file you’ve just downloaded.
  8. Delete the original Fring.app on your iPhone / iTouch.
  9. Copy the unzipped Fring.app from the zip folder across to your iPhone / iTouch either via the WinSCP (PC) or Yummy FTP (Mac).
  10. Now set the permissions to all the files within the Fring.app to 755 (Yummy) or 0755 (WinSCP). You should see all the files being altered as it goes through the process of changing the permissions.
  11. It should work immediately after changing the permissions without a reboot but if it does not work then please reboot.
