Since the release of iPhone 3G, iPhone owners from all over the world reported problems with dropped calls, slow internet connectivity, poor carrier reception, etc. Some iPhone users were so upset that they filled lawsuit against Apple. While everyone was waiting for an answer to the cause, we had learnt that the problem was actually with the bad power algorithm of the iPhone’s firmware versions prior to 2.0.2. Because of which iPhone’s carrier couldn’t handle the load and users were having all those drop calls and slow internet connectivity problems. And finally Apple acknowledged the issue and said the problems will be fixed in September firmware update. Then there came September update with firmware 2.1 and we seem to be happy with it’s overall performance improvements. But a recent review by a unit of German phone operator T Mobile, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG (DT), shows that the problem still exists and it’s because of a more serious problem than just bad algorithms and carrier issues.

Ben Charny at CNN reports that, what appeared to be the problem of the carrier is now believed to be an issue with the iPhone itself. Richard Windsor, an analyst at Nomura Securities, said the problem lies with a chip inside the iPhone that directs the phone’s operations. The chip, made by German semiconductor maker Infineon Technologies AG (IFX), is supposedly unable to handle the load the iPhone puts on it.

“The device is at fault,” said Windsor. He also said, Apple won’t be able to solve the problems with software alone, suggesting the company will have to rebuild the phone.

Now, that sound bad. Even though I am happy with the current state of my iPhone 3G, I will hate to see Apple brings out another iPhone which adds hardware fixes rather than hardware upgrades (which is Apple’s marketing strategy anyway).

But it’s not all bad news from Mr. Windsor. He also admits that despite the issues, iPhone is a good handset and that Apple will be able to correct the problem in subsequent versions of the phone, which doubles as a music player and photo display.
