We all have been waiting for the soft iPhone 3G unlock ever since we got our hands on to the ultimate device. Some of us was impatient and paid to our carrier to unlock it but many of us have been waiting for the Dev team to do their magic. And it looks like that our wait is finally coming to an end. Yes!! Dev team have recently announced that the soft iPhone 3G unlock will be available before the new year’s eve. Sounds great and we can’t wait for it either. But there’s a slight problem.

If you are not aware, Apple have been updating iPhone’s baseband on every firmware update. And that is the biggest challenge for the Dev team. So far the Dev team is able to crack all the recent baseband except the latest one that came with the firmware 2.2. Here’re the firmware and their baseband version:

  • 2.0.0 Firmware & 01.45.00 Baseband
  • 2.0.1 Firmware & 01.48.02 Baseband
  • 2.0.2 Firmware & 02.08.01 Baseband
  • 2.1.0 Firmware & 02.11.07 Baseband
  • 2.2.0 Firmware & 02.28.00 Baseband

Dev team have unlocked upto the baseband 02.11.07 which came with the firmware 2.1. If you’ve updated your iPhone directly through iTunes then you’ll have 02.28.00 baseband. But if you’ve followed our Jailbreaking procedure to update to Firmaware 2.2 (which Dev team suggested) then you’ll still have baseband 2.1.

So as understood, if your baseband version is 02.28.00 then you may have to wait more than the new year’s as Dev team may not be able to release the unlocking solution for that baseband so soon. But again, you never know. So, be around as we’ll release the news and the procedure to soft unlock your iPhone 3G as soon as Dev team announces the big news.
