Competition Announcement
If you’re over the moon with the Sygic turn by turn GPS application for iPhone then wait till you see TomTom releases its GPS app. Not only TomTom’s announcement at the WWDC has become the talk of the moment but also its share price rose by 17%. So you can clearly see the interest of people.
It’s just not the app that everyone is talking about, it’s the car kit that’s got everyone talking. As TomTom says the TomTom solution combines two new TomTom products to provide users with state of the art in-car navigation on their iPhone 3G:
The TomTom navigation application for iPhone; an Apple version of TomTom’s award-winning turn-by-turn navigation software, including IQ Routes and latest maps;- The TomTom car kit for iPhone; a specially developed car kit for secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions, hands-free calling and in-car charging.
Here’s the video demo:
I am sure you have read about iPhone 3GS’ overheating problem. Or you may have even experienced it already. While you might be thinking it’s a random thing, it actually is not. Apple has loosely accepted the fact (though no official announcements) and has issued a support article about it. So if you’re having the same problem then try following their suggestions and see if it works for you.

If you’ve got your hands on the new iPhone, the iPhone 3GS and wondering when will you be able to unlock or jailbreak your device then don’t worry. Because just couple days after the release of iPhone 3GS Dev team has released it’s unlock. Here’s what they had to say about the ultrasn0w unlock for iPhone 3GS.
Our ultrasn0w program uses the at+xlog crash as an injection vector of our unlocking payload — and it does so on the 3GS in exactly the same way as on the 3G! But this injection vector will be lost if you update to 3.1 using the official Apple IPSW, which updates the baseband. So stay away from official 3.1 IPSWs until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband.
Watch the brief video demonstration below:
As promised by the Dev team it didn’t take them long to release ultrasn0w to soft unlock your iPhone 3G to use any SIM card. So if you haven’t upgraded to OS 3 yet because you’ll loose your soft unlock then you’ve nothing to worry about anymore. Just follow these steps and you’ll have your iPhone with the latest firmware and with your chosen phone provider.
But before you can follow these procedure to soft unlock your iPhone 3G, you’ve to first Jailbreak it. So if you haven’t done that yet then do so by following the steps here.
- Go to Cydia on your iPhone
- Then go to “Manage” from the bottom menu navigation
- Select or tap on “Sources” under the Manage section
- Once you’re on the Sources section, click on “Edit” on the top right hand side of the screen
- Then you’ll see the “Add” button will show up on the top left hand side of the screen
- Click on “Add”
- Now put this URL: repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia or Icy. (That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”!) on the popup box and hit “Add Source” and the ultrasn0w software source will be added on the sources list
- Once completed, click on “Return to Cydia”
- Now to go Search and search for ultrasn0w
- When found, click to install and you’re almost done
- Now restart your iPhone by holding down both the power and home button for few seconds and leave both the buttons when you see the Apple logo
- Wait for your iPhone to be restarted completely
- Once restarted, wait for 10-15 seconds for your iPhone to show the new phone network
- That’s it!! You’ve an unlocked iPhone 3G with OS 3 and a lot of freedom
- Enjoy!!
Well, it’s been a long week since Apple released OS 3 and the new faster and smarter iPhone 3G S. Not sure how excited you all are about the new iPhone 3G S, to be honest I am not at all excited about the new one. Why, because I don’t see any real added value to it. Well, if I didn’t have an iPhone then I might have gone for the new one but since I have an iPhone 3G, I don’t think I’ll fall for the new one. Some of you may not agree with me here. So, share your experiences and see what you think.
So, we that the Dev team is alway at it and they’re quick to be on it this time again. Now that baseband isn’t an issue at all, I am sure a lot of you have already upgraded to the latest firmware. Well, I have. Though my iPhone is currently un-useable without the official (useless Telstra sim card), I am not worried about it too much as yellowsn0w will be out and about really soon. Anyway!
So, as always first generation iPhone is fully un-lockable by PwnageTool or QuicPwn. It’s the iPhone 3G which is not yet un-lockable but as I said earlier you don’t have to wait for long.
Now, if you want to unlock first generation iPhone or jailbreak iPhone 3G then just follow the instructions here and you’ll have your iPhone with OS 3 unlocked or jailbroken.
Good Luck!
So the OS 3 is finally here. At about 3 am this morning the OS 3 has been released to Australian iTunes. I don’t know about you guys but I wasn’t really up that late to download and install OS 3 even though I was as much excited as most of you are. A lot of people have complained that they couldn’t download the latest firmware because the apple server couldn’t coupe up with the traffic.
Anyway, it should have eased up by now so if you haven’t updated yours already then get into it now. But be mindful that neither the jailbreak nor the unlocking is available yet. So if you’ve used yellowsn0w to unlock your iPhone then you may want to hold off till Friday when the dev team releases the jailbreaking and unlocking solution. Otherwise if you upgrade now then you won’t be able to use your phone.
But if you’ve already upgraded your iPhone OS then please share your experience with us.
This happens all the time, just before any major event we start seeing leaked information about that event. Some of them becomes reality but most end up being fake or rumors. And Apple’s WWDC is no exception to that. We’re just couple of days away from the WWDC event where Apple is announcing iPhone OS 3.0, Mac OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard and the most talked about, the new iPhone. We sure are very excited about all these and can’t wait any longer for the event.
And to make the wait seem more longer, images of “new” iPhone has emerged the internet. Apparently these images have been leaked from some authentic source. Where the images are authentic or not, we’ll find out in the next couple of days but for now here’re the images to fuel the rumor.
Here are some of the features of new iPhone:
- 16×9 wide-screen display
- ULTRA Thin design
- Darker chrome colored bezel
- New Home Button
- Front facing camera
- 3.2MP Camera with Video support (both front and back cameras)
- 3G Network speeds
The images sure look impressive especially the bigger screen and the ultra thin design. I sure will be tempted to upgrade mine if this is real. So I guess we’ll find out soon whether it’s real or another fine design work by someone.
What do you think?
I know how’re you’re feeling for not being able to use Skype or Fring on the run over 3G/EDGE. I personally used to be annoyed over this. Well, I did patch Fring to use over 3G as I posted here before. But doing that was a bit of a hassle. But fortunately you don’t have to go through that hassle anymore. To patch either Fring or Skype now, all you’ve to do is intall VoIPover3G & Mobile Substrate and you’re done. The only catch is, you’ve to have a Jailbroken iPhone and Cydia installed. If yo haven’t jailbroken your iPhone yet then here’s how to do it.
VoIPover3G tricks apps into thinking that they’re running over Wi-Fi while they’re actually running over 3G. It has been in Cydia for a while now and had Fring & Truephone included. They’ve just added Skype in the app too so now all you’ve to do is open Cydia and search for VoIPover3G & Mobile Substrate and install them and you’re done!
Easy, ai!!
Finally Skype has joined the iPhone party by releasing the Free App for iPhone & iPod Touch. I know we could use Skype before and we’ve been using skype through the other IM apps available on App Store. But having a dedicated app is always a plus.
Almost every feature will be available on the Skype iPhone app. Skype will allow you to make free Skype-to-Skype calls on your iPhone and iPod touch by simply connecting to a Wi-Fi zone. Understandably you won’t be allowed to make calls over 3G or EDGE. But you can make VoIP calls over Wi-Fi. The Skype app also syncs with your iPhone contacts and allows you to filter and search based on users who already have Skype accounts and even make SkypeOut calls through Wi-Fi.
Signing into Skype via 3G, EDGE, GPRS will allow you to check who is online and send them instant message as well.
Overall if you’re a regular Skype user then you’re going to love this app. At least now I can use my iPhone during meetings with the excuse that I am dealing with my off-shore developers :). Nice!!!
