RunKeeper, the app that does what Nike+iPod Nano or iPod Touch does. But without the need for extra device to go with your shoes. The app uses the built-in GPS of the iPhone 3G to enable runners, cyclists, hikers, skiers, walkers, etc. to track your distance, time, and pace, then automatically uploads your data to the RunKeeper website where you can view your routes and walking, running, cycling or hiking history. So if you’re a regular activist of one of these then I think this is a must have Application for your iPhone 3G. The app only works with iPhone 3G, not with first generation iPhone or iPod Touch. Understandably because of the built-in GPS support. The original price of the App was USD $9.99, but for a limited time the App is being given away for FREE. How good is that! It’s not everyday that you get this kind of opportunity. So don’t wait, just grab it now from App Store and give it a go and test it for yourself.

One complaint I’ve heard so far about this app (and it’s a major one) is that it runs out battery really fast. Apparently a fully charged battery runs out in about 2 hours. That’s a bit of a concern, if you ask me. So, if you’re planning for a long off road ride on the weekend then be aware of this.

The app enables you to track:

  • Duration
  • Distance
  • Pace
  • Speed
  • Total Rise
  • Altitude Versus Speed
  • Path Traveled on a Map

Developer’s Tips:

  • Do not use the top-lock button to lock the device, as this will disable the GPS from tracking your activity
  • For optimal results, turn wi-fi off before using RunKeeper

WHAT’S NEW IN THIS VERSION:

  • Trips that are not sent or are sent incompletely to the web will be resent automatically
  • Trips can now be sent manually after the fact if you do not want to use or do not have a data plan
  • If GPS signal is lost during a trip, RunKeeper will try to regain a signal automatically without interrupting your trip
  • A GPS status indicator has been added so you will know how accurately your trip is being logged
