xGPS: Turn-by-Turn Directions Finally Comes to iPhone
Have you been using the GPS on your iPhone 3G on a regular basis? If you ask me the same question then the answer is no. Why? I am sure you know the answer. That dotted move on the map is pretty much useless when you’re driving and trying to follow a direction. Why Apple don’t feel the need for a Turn-by-Turn Direction with voice support and not even allowing companies such as TomTom to develop an iPhone version of their app is out of my understanding. But the good news is, finally turn-by-turn navigation with voice direction has come to iPhone in the form of xGPS.
But before you get too excited you should know that the app is only available for Jailbroken iPhone. So if you’re still in doubt whether to jailbreak or not then this news should be enough for you to jailbreak yours. Here’s a step by step procedure for Jailbreaking iPhone 2.2 and Unlocking iPhone 3G. The app is currently available through Cydia and as you may have guesses already, it’s FREE. The current version of xGPS (v1.1) doesn’t have voice support but the upcoming version 1.2 which is due to release on the 20th will have voice support.
xGPS uses Google map and driving directions with a turn-by-turn navigation with voice direction (v1.2). The application also supports a number of external GPS receiver so the first generation iPhone and iPod Touch’s can use the application as well. You can get the application now from Cydia and try it yourself. Because the app uses Google map, it works well for Australia as well.
Here’s the app on action:

This would have bn excellent for The taxi driver i had today. The only little hitch we found just using maps in my 3G iphone, was that roadworks, road closures & traffic jams/accidents ahead, not being available, slowed us down because of all the detours we had to take. This meant going back to the old street directory. If we had the bonus of verbal directions it could also have bn better.

you should have a line in connection with your car stereo and a Griffin car mount so that you can rotate the mount and work in landscape.
